Academic and Professional Journey: A Rising Star in Mathematics

Sherry Dyson went to Morgan State University. Her natural talent meant that she would acquire a degree in mathematics, an extraordinary feat for an African-American woman. She would teach at the school and college levels. Peers characterised her as a patient guide, a strict teacher, and an inspiration for generations of students.

According to other sources, she was also one of the first hired at a university’s School of Nursing to work on nutrition science.

Through her legacy as a teacher, we see a woman committed to empowering others, demonstrating that knowledge is not just a means to get a job, but a means to change the world. Despite her troubles, she remained dedicated to teaching. At one point, it became a survival mechanism and self-discovery after taking on disappointing relationships.

The Marriage: Partnership, Turbulence, and Hard Choices

In 1977, Sherry Dyson married Chris Gardner, a man who had dreams of attending medical school. Their relationship seemed to be one of shared ambition. In 1981, Christopher Jarrett Medina Gardner, a son, was born. Trouble had been brewing just below the surface.

Chris’s choice to reject a career in medicine created dissonance with Sherry’s values.

Throughout their marriage, the couple dealt with financial hardship and almost became homeless as Chris worked multiple jobs to make ends meet.

The characters don’t behave or value the same things anymore. Chris’s affair with dental student Jackie Medina became pregnant, and resulted in an irreversible rupture. Although Chris was married to Sherry for 9 years, he left her after three years. Thereafter, he moved in with Jackie. The couple was divorced in 1986, and Sherry stood by Chris despite the problems. Moreover, he provided him with much-needed comfort and support at a time when he was down and out, even though it hurt her and he cheated.

After the divorce, Sherry Dyson remained very private and focused on her personal life and professional presence. There is little information about other relationships or children, but most sources agree that she focused on mathematics, education and inner healing.

The loss of her parents, followed by a marriage break-up and an illness, became a recurring pattern in her later years. He was resilient. Sources indicate that her investment in teaching provided her with comfort and purpose during this period.

Sherry Dyson, unfortunately, passed away in April of 2000, aged 51. Sherry had reportedly had cancer, among other illnesses. Even though many people keep guessing how she died, the end of her life came with great struggles, but also with great dignity.

Legacy: More Than a “Supporting Character”

Sherry Dyson is popularly known for marrying Chris Gardner. However, this is not the only aspect of her life.  Her life story is a powerful testament to the value of education.  It discourages hatred and prejudices against other people.  As a teacher, she touched many lives; as a survivor, she modelled persistence; as a mother, she helped steer Chris Gardner, Jr., and as a woman, she contributes to the narrative of Black female greatness in STEM at a time when it was not uncommon.

Her narrative, despite being overlooked, powerfully reminds us that every “hero” in history and cinema has other people behind them who made an impact.
