Recent Weather Incidents
The weather has been problematic for Bradford in the last couple of months. Heavy rains fell and flooded parts of the city on September 26, 2024. Heavy rains caused water-logging on the roads disrupting vehicular traffic and other activities.
Previously, on May 29, 2024, a severe thunderstorm brought torrential rain and hail here. The flash flood on major roads and public spaces was due to downpours. The M606 motorway became blocked, and car parking at The Broadway shopping center experienced short-term inaccessibility as a result of flooding.
Storm Babet’s Impact
This image shows the impact of Storm Babet on parts of the UK including near Bradford, in October 2023. A plane slid off the runway as it was attempting to land at Leeds Bradford Airport, during high winds and rain on 20 October 2023. Sadly, no one was hurt, though it does showcase the strength of the storm.
Met Office Warnings
Bradford has recently been under several weather warnings from the Met Office. An amber warning for wind swept the whole of the district on January 21, 2024. Authorities urged people to secure loose items and exercise caution due to the risk of debris on roads.
Flood Alerts
Bradford is also at risk of flooding. More than a week without rain on November 10, 2023, saw dozens of flood alerts around the country that affected areas such as the River Wharfe. It followed the heavy rain from Storm Gerrit, which caused concern about swollen waters and endangering property.
Historical Weather Events
Bradford has a history of severe weather events. In July 1968, the city experienced significant flooding due to intense thunderstorms. Streets in the city center were submerged, causing widespread disruption. This event remains one of the most notable weather incidents in Bradford’s history.
Preparation and Safety Measures
Given Bradford’s vulnerability to the elements, it is a case of staying safe, being aware and standing by. If you monitor weather forecasts regularly and listen out for Met Office warnings, they can help reduce some of the risk. Winter/gritting | Bradford Council
