City Of Troy blew his rivals away in the 2024 Derby at Epsom, justifying why his trainer Aidan O’Brien was so bullish about his chances, despite a disappointing performance previously at Newmarket.

Under the hands of former Champion Jockey Ryan Moore, the three-year-old colt hit the front with two furlongs to go and he galloped strongly to the finish line. It has been described by some pundits in the sport as one of the best Derby performances in many years.
British Classic Winner Now Has a Huge Reputation
City Of Troy ended last season as the Champion Two-Year-Old and his latest performance at Epsom suggests he has improved again. Horse racing fans are now looking forward to his next appearance on the track. He has entries in the St James’s Palace Stakes and Irish Derby. Those placing Royal Ascot bets on the former can get odds of +3300, while he is -175 in the betting for the latter.
As the horse racing results show, the British Classic winner finished just ninth of 11 runners in the 2,000 Guineas earlier this season. O’Brien has admitted that he did not prepare his horse enough for that challenge.
Other options this summer in the UK for the Derby winner include the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. Those Group One races would see him take on the older horses in the 1m4f division.
City Of Troy in Right Hands With O’Brien
Although he may have got his colt’s preparation wrong ahead of the 2,000 Guineas, a lot of credit must go O’Brien’s way for getting his horse back to his best at Epsom in the Derby. He showed why he is considered one of the greatest Flat trainers in history.
O’Brien will now be carefully considering all the options that allow City Of Troy to shine again. A victory in the latter would help him achieve something no Derby winner has done before.
What City Of Troy achieves in open-age company will also strengthen O’Brien’s claim that he is the best horse he has ever trained. The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris is the most important turf race of them all across Europe; success there will ensure his name goes down with some of the greatest 1m4f horses ever.

Frankel is arguably the best Flat horse of all-time with his unbeaten record extended to 14 victories from as many starts. Trained by Henry Cecil in Newmarket, the colt won the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket. He received a peak official rating of 140, the highest in the history of the sport.
Sea The Stars is another horse that many pundits rate as one of the greatest of all time. He won the 2,000 Guineas, Derby, Eclipse Stakes, International Stakes, Irish Champions Stakes, and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in the same season.
Whatever the future holds for City Of Troy, there can be no doubt he is a horse who has a lot of potential. If he repeats more performances like he did at Epsom, he is sure to go down as one of the best thoroughbreds ever.
