Three separate accidents on the M4 eastbound near Newport, Cardiff caused big delays this morning, Traffic Wales reported. These events caused significant traffic disruptions and public concerns about local road safety.
Details of the Incidents
The initial crash happened close to Junction 28 (Tredegar Park) at around 6.30am. It was a two-vehicle accident, and no serious injuries. Emergency teams quickly got on the scene, blocking one lane to clear up the area on the M4.
A second accident occurred at around 7:15 AM near Junction 30 (Cardiff Gate). This involved a collision with at least two other vehicles and resulted in further disruption with two lanes closed. Paramedics treated multiple patients on scene for non-life threatening injuries.
The third incident occurred around 8:00 AM near Junction 29 (Castleton). One overturned vehicle completely closed the M4 eastbound carriageway for more than an hour. Emergency responders took the moderately injured driver to a local hospital.
Traffic Impact
The series of crashes led to large traffic backups at the height of the morning rush. Commuters were delayed by more than 90 minutes, with tailbacks running for several miles. Drivers heading towards Cardiff diverted from the M4, using the A48(M) and local roads in Castleton as alternative routes.
Emergency Response
Police, fire and ambulance teams responded at each incident as emergency services rushed at each instance on the M4. They worked in concert to provide immediate medical care for the injured and remove damaged vehicles. All lanes were reopened by 10:30 AM, and the impact on traffic flow was gradually easing.
Public Advisory
Motorists were encouraged to be alert and follow speed limits, particularly in inclement weather conditions on the M4, authorities said. They also advised consulting live traffic information before heading out to be up to date on potential delays.
