The DWP offers a wide range of benefits to support those in need. But, those who receive the State Pension might not qualify for some of these benefits. This article details four DWP benefits that cannot be claimed by those already in receipt of the State Pension(SP), such as Universal Credit.
Universal Credit
Universal Credit is a means-tested benefit that is supposed to help low-paid workers among others. But people who receive SPnormally are not eligible for Universal Credit. This is due to the fact that SP is seen as an income that might surpass the income level necessary in order to remain eligible for Universal Credit.
If you get a State Pension there will be other financial help available. Although Universal Credit may apply as you age its primarily for working age.
Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
If you are actively seeking work, you may be entitled to Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA). People receiving the SP are not eligible to claim JSA, because the SP is designed to provide them with a minimum income in their retirement years. JSA is for those who are still of working age and are actively seeking work.
Those over the State Pension age might consider additional benefits which provide financial support, like Pension Credit.
Economic and Support Allowance (ESA)
Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) goes to people who are disabled or have a health condition that affects their capability of working. This means, however, those collecting the State Pension will not qualify for ESA. This is partly because the SP already provides income support for people in retirement.
Instead of Employment Support Allowance (ESA), those who receive the State Pension may be eligible for extra help through Pension Credit or other pension-focused benefits.
Housing Benefit
Housing Benefit assists people with the expense of their rent. But anyone who has already reached State Pension age is unable to make a claim for Housing Benefit it has been phased out for working age people as part of Universal Credit.
New claimants have not been able to apply for Housing Benefit after reaching State Pension age but may be entitled to the Housing Element of Universal Credit. But this does not apply to people who are already on the State Pension.
Alternative Benefits for State Pension Receivers
While some benefits are lost as a result of the State Pension, other financial assistance might be possible. One of these benefits is called Pension Credit, which tops up the incomes of low-income pensioners. Depending on their situation, older people may also be eligible for Council Tax Reduction or free prescriptions.
