Brendon McCullum revealed that injuries disrupted England’s training before the final two One Day Internationals in the England vs India ODI series. The team management isn’t on the same page with the media. McCullum said that injuries to key players forced the team to change its plans.
Jofra Archer hurt his hand, first-dayer Brydon Carse hurt his hamstring, and Jamie Overton his calf. England plans to use the tri-series in Karachi against Pakistan to get back on track after the England vs India ODI series.
McCullum Defends England’s Limited Training Sessions
McCullum explained that the team prioritized recovery over additional training. It is important to rest the players as there is a busy cricket calendar.
McCullum noted that players have played several matches, and keeping them fresh is equally important especially with all the injuries. “We have done plenty of training, but some players needed to step back to stay fit for upcoming matches.”
Kevin Pietersen Criticizes England’s Approach
Former England captain Kevin Pietersen criticized the team’s lack of preparation, especially after losing the preceding T20 series 4-1. Injuries, he insisted, should not have stopped batters from polishing their technique against spin for the England vs India ODI series.
Pietersen took to X to say that injuries happen but the schedule isn’t any different than bilateral series in the past. Batters should have been in the nets against bowlers to up their game against spin. That approach saved my career.”
England Plans Intense Training in Pakistan
Despite recent setbacks, McCullum confirmed that England will have three training sessions in Pakistan before their first Champions Trophy match against Australia on February 22.
“We hope to have a fully fit squad in Pakistan and look forward to the challenge,” McCullum stated. This was a tough series, but we see it as good preparation for the tournament after the England vs India ODI series.
