British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK and France are working on a peace deal with Ukraine. The former US president Donald Trump will then be presented the deal. After the critical meeting at the White House on Friday, further step in the Ukraine issue, according to Starmer.
Reviving the Peace Process with European Support
Starmer explained that the plan would not make sense without sufficient American support to back it. He said any truce will need the US to guarantee Russia does not “ever again invade or attack” Ukraine. In his speech to the conference of EU leaders, the Prime Minister spelled how he would like there to be a “coalition of the willing” from European countries to support Ukraine’s cause, with Britain and France leading the way on a potential UK peace deal.
“We need countries in Europe that are prepared to do more,” Starmer said in an interview on BBC television. The Prime Minister further noted that the UK and France have been making great strides on peace plans.
According to Starmer, the plan is being developed in partnership with French President Emmanuel Macron and would be later presented to the U.S. for more backing toward the UK peace deal.
Security Guarantee for European Peacekeepers
Starmer also stressed the need for any European peacekeeping force to have a U.S. security guarantee. A peace deal in Ukraine would need U.S. protection and a reliable backup, he said. He said that without this guarantee, the deal will fail.
Starmer spoke to Macron and Trump on Saturday just after hosting President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in London. Following a tense meeting between Trump and Zelenskiy in the White House, the US-UK deal was likely questioned.
As the United Kingdom and France work on the peace proposal, Starmer remains focused on ensuring it meets the broader international backing the peace effort on Ukraine requires. And thus, a UK peace deal is pursued.
