Replacement for BBC Radio 2’s early breakfast is Owain Wyn Evans

Owain Wyn Evans was named host of the brand newly appointed Early Breakfast show host at BBC Radio 2, replacing Vanessa Feltz.

Its BBC News theme tune drumming star will present this show at the BBC Cymru Wales broadcast centre in Cardiff starting in January 2023.

It’s the very only Radio 2 weekday programme to relocate from London The tender will open today for producers to submit proposals for the show.

Owain tells us: “When I asked my parents for a pair turntables and a mixing table from an e-shop for DJs at Llanelli at the age of 13, I did not allow myself to imagine that I’d one day have the show of my own on Radio 2!

“I cannot wait to assist you to begin the day with Early Breakfast live from Cardiff. Bore da dahlings is what we call it”in Wales!”

His connection to Wales is apparent and I’m thrilled that he’ll be live broadcasting from Cardiff every day at 7:30 am. His wit and warmth make him the ideal host to start the day for listeners all over the world who have evidently and warmly loved him each time he’s been on air on this show.”

Owain has been an radio and television presenter for over 20 years and started his broadcasting career at age of 18 as a child’s newscaster for BBC Wales, before moving into the role of a weather anchor at BBC Look North (Yorkshire), BBC North West Tonight and BBC Breakfast.

After a stint in Radio Cymru, he went on to host radio programs for a variety of BBC Local Radio stations including Radio York, Radio Leeds and Radio Manchester. In December of 2020, Evans hosted a series of “in conversation with” shows on BBC Sounds in which he interviewed celebrities such as Little Mix, Kylie Minogue and Dolly Parton.

A fervent drummer from when he was seven years old, Owain shot to international recognition when, during the lockdown of 2020, he created the video of him playing on the BBC News theme tune, that was watched hundreds of millions of times across the world. It was the basis for his record-breaking 24-hour Drumathon to benefit Children In Need, which generated more than PS3.8m and was one of the biggest 24-hour campaign in the history of 41 years of BBC Children In Need.

Since he began with his journey as a host here in Wales and now, it’s a great to hear that he’ll soon be taking the airwaves from Cardiff and awakening listeners all over the UK. Croeso Owain!”

Owain is replacing Vanessa Feltz, who stepped out of hosting The Early Morning Breakfast show in July of this year.

The date of the start of Scott Mills has also been confirmed and OJ Borg taking over in October following Steve Wright’s resignation from the afternoons on weekdays.
