Somerset and the outskirts of Devon are under a warning for snow as winter weather grips the region. There is a weather warning in place this weekend with the potential to cause disruption, especially for people on the move in impacted spots, according to the Met Office. Here’s what you need to know about the snow warning, what to expect and how to prepare.
A Cold Front Delivers Snow to Somerset and Devon
The Met Office has also issued a yellow snow warning for Somerset and part of Devon. The alert, which is in effect from late evening to the early morning, cautions of heavy snow in some areas. A cold front moving across the country is forecasted to bring winter conditions capable of disrupting travel and daily routines.
Timing and Areas Affected
The snow is forecast to start late at night and last into the morning. Higher elevated areas are expected to see more snowfall while lower elevations may get light flurries. The warning covers all of Somerset and the southern tip of Devon, especially in the Exmoor and Dartmoor areas.
Travel Disruptions and Safety recommendations
Roads can be slippery with snow and ice, making travel difficult. Drivers are urged to not take unnecessary trips during the snowfall, especially on untreated roads. If you do need to travel, ensure your vehicle is well-prepared for winter, checking that it has appropriate tyres, clean antifreeze and, ideally, a full tank of fuel.
Public transport services may also be affected, with delays and cancellations possible in response to adverse conditions. If you plan to go out, you’re advised to check local transport updates, especially for buses and trains that can be running reduced timetables.
How Much Might Accumulate and Where It Could Fall
3-5 cm of powder is the forecast for some places, while mountains will see more accumulate. There are some communities that may be temporarily disrupted, some more than others, particularly in rural or less accessible areas. Parts of Exmoor and Dartmoor could see as much as 10cm of snow, which may cause localised problems such as blocked roads or power loss.
Tips for Staying Safe While the Snow Falls
Residents in those areas are being urged to take additional precautions. For those out, take care as icy patches could form on pavements and make them slippery. Make sure your heating system is operating properly, and reach out to older people or vulnerable neighbours who may need assistance during the cold snap.
