50 Years Lifelong Service to the Club
Tony Book, a former captain and manager of Manchester City, has died aged 90. His passing was announced Tuesday by the Premier League club. Book was picked up by City in 1966, aged 31 The next year, he was named captain. He guided them to five major prizes. Those included one First Division title, one FA Cup, one League Cup and one European Cup Winners’ Cup.
Management Success and License to Remain
Tony Book retired as a player in 1974. He then had a successful spell with City between 1974 and 1979. He led them to EFL Cup glory at Wembley in 1976. The next season, they were runners-up in Division One. Book was also caretaker manager in 1989 and 1993.
Tributes and Legacy
“We welcome this decision,” said City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak in a statement. Tony Book, he said, helped mold Manchester City for almost sixty years. He served the game as a player, captain and manager. His conduct was exemplary. He had grand ambitions for the club. He always downplayed his accomplishments. Supporters will remember him. He laid the foundations for future success.
The Early Career And Final Tribute
Tony Book began his career at 21. He played for Frome Town, Bath City, Toronto City and Plymouth Argyle. He eventually joined City. Flags around the Etihad Stadium and City Football Academy are flying at half-mast. This honors Book’s memory.
