ALDI OPENING ITS 10TH ‘LOCAL’ STORE IN LONDON

Today marks the grand opening of Aldi’s newest ‘Local’ store in London, located on Old Street. This is Aldi’s tenth such location in the city.

After a successful test run in Balham in March 2019, Aldi Local stores have now opened in Camden, Kilburn, Tooting, and Kingston, with a fifth Local store scheduled to open on Finchley Road in the coming week.

These smaller-format establishments typically span 600 square meters and can be found on the bustling London thoroughfares. Compared to a typical Aldi store, which carries roughly 1,800 items, they stock around 1,500.

“There are still far too many people living in London who don’t have access to a nearby Aldi – but we’re committed to changing that,” said Graham Hetherington, Regional Managing Director at Aldi UK.

We hope to continue to explore for suitable possibilities to open even more Local stores, as Aldi Local allows us to provide our unbeatable values in a convenient format to more London shoppers.

Grant Ugwuegbulam-Condor, the store’s manager, will oversee a staff of 30 locals at the Old Street location.

Workers at Aldi locations within the M25 can earn up to £11.55 per hour, which is higher than the actual living wage rates proposed by the Living Wage Foundation.

Students from St. Luke’s C of E Primary School and ParalympicsGB’s Oliver Lam-Watson cut the ribbon to officially open the store at 7 a.m. today.

As part of Aldi’s Get Set to Eat Fresh program, the athletes handed out free bags of produce from the store’s popular Super 6 range to the first 30 customers in line before giving a motivational assembly to students at St. Luke’s C of E Primary School.

It has been a fantastic morning here at the launch of the Old Street store,” Grant Ugwuegbulam-Condor remarked. It was great to see so many new faces today, and I can’t wait to get to know more of the neighborhood in the coming weeks.

Oliver Lam-Watson, a hero of Team GB at the Paralympics, said, “I had a fantastic time opening the new Aldi this morning.” It was a privilege to help cut the ribbon and usher in the first clients.

Kate French, an Olympian for Team Great Britain, recently spoke to students at St. Luke’s C of E Primary School about the value of a healthy diet and how it can be enjoyable to work together as a family to plan and prepare nutritious meals. Inspiring students to be physically active and try new sports is another goal of ours.

The new Aldi Local shop is encouraging neighborhood organizations to sign up for the community engagement platform Neighbourly in order to obtain leftover food and perishable items. Please contact aldi@neighbourly.com if your organization is interested in collaborating with the nearby Aldi supermarket.

205 Old Street, London, EC1V 9QN is the address of the store, and its hours of operation are 7AM-11PM (Monday through Saturday) and 11AM-5PM (Sunday).
